Sheffield Field Trip

Year 10 and 11 students visited Sheffield to carry out urban fieldwork for their Geography Controlled Assessments this year. The title of the coursework has to alternate each year for the WJEC exam board. One year students compare the impact of tourism on different villages within the Peak District. The other year, students compare Quality of Life in two areas of Sheffield, Highfield, (which is the area immediately around Bramhall Lane) and Norton,(next to Graves Park in the south of Sheffield). Students conduct bi-polar surveys looking at different aspects of Quality of Life, including housing, services, transport and the environment. The students also conduct a traffic survey and then use this raw data to inform comparisons.

Enjoyable Christmas time raises £1000

Enjoyable and productive events took place at the end of last term with HVC students marking Christmas in a time honoured fashion. Each house celebrated with a 'Hogwarts' style served Christmas lunch with bespoke entertainment. Students described how they had “really enjoyed it – really fun” and “very tasty”. A happy Y 10 student described her house Christmas lunch as “one of the funniest ever and the dinner ladies did a great job” and another student explained how “the best bits were the pigs in blankets, they played my favourite songs and the entertainment was really good”.

The annual Carol Service took place on Tuesday 13th December at St Peter's Parish Church, Hope with a mixture of traditional and religious music performed by HVC students. A community member of St Peter's described the Service as being “very good and packed as usual”.

The final day of term featured the Student Bazaar, co-ordinated by Mr Thorpe, with each tutor group involved in designing and running a stall. The event raised an amazing £1000 to be split between supporting Kavunyalalo in Kenya and Cancer Research. Stalls ranged from the “especially” popular throwing buckets of water and sponges at teachers (outside in sub-zero temperatures), to raffles, competitions and cake stalls. The afternoon saw a traditional school disco and range of alternative activities which helped to ensure our students wandered home for a well- earned Christmas break.

Parent Governor Vacancy

The school's governors are responsible for making high-level decisions including:

  • setting the strategic direction, policies and objectives
  • approving the budget
  • reviewing progress against the budget and objectives
  • challenging and supporting senior staff
  • playing a part in appointing staff

This is all the more important for Hope Valley College since it became an Academy in September this year, meaning it is independent from local government.

Parents, or carers who would like to be appointed are being invited to put their names forward.  If there are more nominees offering to serve than there are vacancies there will be an election held.

Candidates will need to be proposed and seconded by parents of students registered at the school.   All nominations should be returned to Juile Wain, Clerk to the Governors, via the school by Monday 30 January 2012.

Information on volunteering as a School Governor is available at direct.gov or you may email the clerk: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
