Drama Department
Hope Valley College has a thriving drama department. All students at Key Stage Three have one drama lesson a week. At Key Stage Four, students have the opportunity to study drama GCSE following the Edxcel course. All students have the opportunity to be involved in a range of extra-curricular activities both as a participator and a leader.
The department is led by Alison Scorer who is supported by Gertie Whitfield and Paul Dearden.
The philosophy of the department is to encourage the personal development of every individual. developing their self-confidence along with their ability to communicate creatively and effectively with the wide range of people they will meet throughout their lives. Their skills of empathy are developed through a range of dramatic techniques, encouraging them to put themselves into other peoples shoes in order to understand their motivation, thoughts, feelings and actions.
Students work in a safe, mutually supportive environment where they are encouraged to recognise the worth of their ideas whilst respecting the views of their peers. All work is practically based and can involve them working on their own, in pairs and in small groups as well as in a whole class situation.
Whilst performance is an assessment strand in drama students are also assessed on their ability to respond to a variety of texts, their contribution to the development of the groups ideas and their constructive evaluation of both the work in progress and the final piece.
Students participate in a range of different activities which may include games and discussions. They use a range of exploratory techniques including role play, narration, still image, forum theatre, physical theatre, role on the wall, thought track, key moments, split focus, replay, conscience tunnel, proxemics diagrams.....
