Y11 English work - Friday 24 Feb

Students should complete all three tasks and return to their English teacher on Monday 27th February.  The tasks should take a minimum of two hours to complete and students should complete them to the best of their ability.  This work is important preparation for one of their English Literature exams in May.  Students should also be supporting this work by re-reading 'Of Mice and Men' and focusing closely on Steinbeck's use of language.  Discussing the book with others is also highly recommended to promote the understanding and appreciation of different interpretations.

Sporting Success

Joe Laughton water poloTom CraigA Hope Valley College student, Joel Leighton, has been selected for the Great Britain boys water polo team which is travelling to the Ukraine from the 2nd - 6th May 2012.  His mother, Pippa Jones, said "We were not expecting Joel to make such rapid progress within the squads and certainly didn't expect this! He is surprised and very excited, but has worked very hard and will now need to work even harder in preparation for the event"

Also many congratulations to Tom Craig in Year 10 who gained 3rdplace in the British Schools Cycling Association National under 15s Boys Cyclo-Cross Championship 2012 that took place at Thornbridge Outdoor Centre at Great Longstone, Bakewell. The races last for approximately 30 minutes and Tom says “I was very pleased with my result”.

Geography Field Trip to Newcastle

Newcastle TripThe Newcastle geography fieldtrip is a great opportunity for final year students to see a range of urban and physical geographical processes in action. The focus of the expedition is on revision and celebration of the course together. On the first day, students travel to Gateshead and see the incredible regeneration that has occurred on the Quayside. Students visit the Baltic art house, the Sage music centre and St Mary's church, which houses a historical view of the changing Quayside since Roman times. Later that day the group cross the Millennium 'Eye' bridge over the Tyne and have dinner in Newcastle itself. A trip to the cinema and then a brief journey through the heart of a Newcastle Saturday night finish the evening, before heading south to Washington for a well-earned rest in the hotel. On Sunday, the students travel to Marsden Bay to study coastal processes, including the rapidly eroding cliffs and further south still, the slowly disappearing beaches of mining waste. Weary students then travel by minibus back to Hope Valley before College starts all over again the next day.

Sheffield Field Trip

Year 10 and 11 students visited Sheffield to carry out urban fieldwork for their Geography Controlled Assessments this year. The title of the coursework has to alternate each year for the WJEC exam board. One year students compare the impact of tourism on different villages within the Peak District. The other year, students compare Quality of Life in two areas of Sheffield, Highfield, (which is the area immediately around Bramhall Lane) and Norton,(next to Graves Park in the south of Sheffield). Students conduct bi-polar surveys looking at different aspects of Quality of Life, including housing, services, transport and the environment. The students also conduct a traffic survey and then use this raw data to inform comparisons.
