The Library is at the heart of our learning community providing a wide range of multimedia resources to support the curriculum in a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. The Library is equipped with 10 computers, linked to the College network, with software and learning packages for both day school and adult learners. However we still believe that books are important for learn
ing and leisure: our borrowers can choose from over 10,000 books.
Students have access to the Library during the school day, breaks, lunchtimes and after school. Qualified, experienced library staff are available throughout the day, and until 9.00 pm on several evenings each week, to support learners of all ages.
Reading for pleasure
Reading is a wonderful way to spend leisure time, and recent research has shown that it also has major benefits for children's educational and personal development. (See the report by the National Literacy Trust). We promote reading for pleasure in various ways, including reading challenges, Children's Book Week and World Book Day events, shadowing activities for the Carnegie shortlist, themed displays, book fairs, the Library book club, students' book reviews etc. The Library's Reading Matters Blog has recommendations for good reads for both adults and students.
Teams from the College have performed well in the Derbyshire Literature Challenge, gaining first place in 2007 and second place in 2008.
Visit by David Gilman, author of the Danger Zone series, for an abseiling event to publicise his recent book, Ice Claw.
Information Literacy
Independent learning is highly valued at Hope Valley College. As a foundation for this, Year 7 students receive weekly lessons in the Library throughout the Autumn term to develop their skills in finding and using information efficiently and legally.
Careers Resources
A well resourced multi media Connexions section contains information on careers and personal issues for day school students and adults. A resource list of relevant websites is available here.Community Users
