A group of year 9 students from Hope Valley College recently took part in a Language Film day at New Mills School.
The students worked with counterparts from St. Philip Howard School, New Mills School and Glossopdale School to produce a short film in French or German depending on which Language they had studied since year 7.Teacher Trudy Hodges, who oversaw the day, said: "Our students worked really hard and seamlessly inter-grated with the students from the other schools. Considering the short time frame they had to produce the film all the students produced some fantastic results which demonstrated a very good command of their ‘second' language."
During the course of the morning students worked on producing a script and storyboard for a short film entitled "A Bank Robbery" before spending the afternoon rehearsing and then filming their sketches.
Mrs. Hodges added: "Due to the topic of the films the students learnt extra language to what they usually do in lessons - oddly enough we don't get any bank robberies in modern foreign language lessons - which increased their vocabulary and increased their understanding of language. All the students seemed to really enjoy the day and I was really impressed with both their enthusiasm and behaviour over the course of the day."
Principal Bernie Hunter said: "The Language day represented a fantastic opportunity to develop and improve their existing language skills in a different and exciting way. Not only did they improve their Language skills they also learnt a little bit about media production and performance skills - highlighting the benefits of applied learning. I'd like to thank Mrs. Hodges for enabling our students to take part."
