elizabeth_selvey.jpgYear 11 student Elizabeth Selvey has been selected into the Great British under 16 women's water polo squad.

16 year old Elizabeth attended a training squad at Crystal Palace in late December and was subsequently called up to the Team GB squad - giving her the chance to represent team GB at the 2016 Olympics in London.

Elizabeth said: "I am delighted to have been called up to the GB squad. I love playing water polo and every sports person dreams of getting the opportunity to represent their country. However if I'm going to keep my place in the squad I will have to keep working hard and playing well."

Elizabeth also plays for Sheffield Women's Senior ‘A' team who play in the top flight of the water polo league structure. Recently the team won the right to represent the UK in the League of European Nations Trophy in Italy which saw Elizabeth travel to Italy to compete against French, Dutch and Italian teams.

Elizabeth's Mum, Eileen, who is the teams manager said: "We are really proud of what Elizabeth has achieved. She only took up the sport four years ago and to come as far as she has in such a short space of time is a credit to her hard work and dedication."

Elizabeth has a strict training schedule which sees her train twice a week with the team, lane swim twice a week, play games at weekends and gym workouts. In addition to this she has recently started to help train the younger teams as well as keeping on top of her academic studies.

Mrs Selvey added: "I know all Mums say this about their children but Elizabeth truly is amazing. She comes straight home from school and does her homework before going training - she even takes her work and does it on the team bus when we travel to away matches. I couldn't do what she does!"

2010 is already looking full of promise for Elizabeth with tournaments in Portugal, France and the Ukraine pencilled in. However it is the Olympics 2016 that Elizabeth has her sights on. She said: "I would love to represent Great Britain in the 2016 Olympics and that is my dream. But there are lots of other players hoping to do that so I just have to work at my own game and see what happens."

Principal Bernie Hunter said: "Elizabeth is a model student and a great example to other young sports people. Not only does she keep on top of her studies but she also manages to compete in her chosen sport at a very high level. Her success is a shining beacon to others as to what can be achieved through hard work, dedication, desire and commitment. Everybody at the College are incredibly proud of her achievements and we wish her every success in attaining her dream place in the 2016 Olympics."

Once completing her GCSE's this coming summer Elizabeth plans to go to Lady Manners to study for her A-Levels.
