Hope Valley College students in the Stretch Programme have been honing their cooking and entertaining skills.
They recently hosted a visit from some students from St Thomas More's school in Buxton and cooked up a surprise birthday lunch for College Principal Mr. Hunter.
Janette Saxby the Stretch Programme leader said: "The students have been working really hard over the past term on their hosting and cooking skills before applying them to real life situations. The results they have produced have been of an extremely high standard and I have been really impressed with their enthusiasm to get involved."
For the visit of their counterparts from St Thomas More the students prepared lunch for both visiting students and staff before entertaining their guests with fun and games in the College hall throughout the afternoon.
Shortly after the visit the students put their cooking skills further to the test as they cooked Mr. Hunter a surprise birthday lunch where the centre piece was a splendid chocolate dessert that was enjoyed by all concerned.
Mrs Saxby added: "The Stretch Programme helps students to gain important life and social skills by encouraging them to mix their own experiences with situations they will face in the real world. It is important that we equip students not only with knowledge during their time at College but also life and social skills. The stretch programme finds interesting, exciting and applicable ways of providing students with these."
Principal Bernie Hunter said: "My birthday lunch was a terrific surprise and I am very grateful to the students for doing it for me. Hopefully in the process of preparing it they will have learnt some valuable skills and lessons that will stand them in good stead once they leave College. The Stretch Programme is proving to be a huge success and hopefully it will continue to do so. It really does provide students with a brilliant way of learning skills they may not normally of acquired if we were still confined to a purely academic curriculum."
