Year 10 Construction and Built Environment students recently visited a working construction site at Bredbury near Stockport.
The site at Bredbury is under one of Costain's, an internationally renowned Engineering and Construction company, with whom the College recently set up a partnership to help aid their delivery of the Construction and Built Environment diploma.
Trip leader and Head of Construction, Martin Streets said: "The visit was a massive success that all the students really enjoyed and learnt a lot from. Having an opportunity to see a real life construction site in action really helps the students gain a greater understanding of the skills they are learning during lessons at the College."
During the visit students were treated to a series of talks from expert speakers on a range of topics including Health and Safety, Planning and Project Management. They were then given a full and comprehensive tour of the site where they got to see Costain's staff hard at work. Whilst at the site students wore their personal protective clothing and equipment which was very kindly donated to the College by Costain.
Mr. Streets added: "The support and guidance of Costain in the past few months has been essential in bringing the students learning to life and in giving them a thorough knowledge of how the construction industry works in the real world – which is a key aspect of the course. A huge thanks is owed to all the staff at Costain, not only for their ongoing support, but also for giving our students access to their high level of expertise which will prove vital in the development of the students learning."
It is hoped that the students will visit the site on a monthly basis so as to monitor the progress being made and see the construction process in full.
Principal Bernie Hunter said: "The support of Costain in our deliverance of the Construction and Built Environment has been invaluable. In order for our Applied learning courses to be a success it is vital that we have input from employers and industry experts so that we can prepare our students for the world of work to the best of our ability. I would like to thank Mr. Streets for making the trip happen as well as Costain for making it such a fabulous experience for our students."
Costain's current projects include the revitalisation of the A14 and a major contract with the Highways Agency to regenerate roads in the Midlands.
