Year 8 Students from Hope Valley College recently visited the Yorkshire Sculpture Park near Wakefield as part of their Art studies.

The students had been studying sculptures in their art lessons and are in the process of making their own pieces. As part of their lessons they had been looking at the work of Peter Randall and Barbara Hepworth - amongst others.

Head of Art Jayne Townsend said: "It is important that students get to see the art they study in the classroom up close and in real life so that they can get a true idea of scale and look at the skill and craft that go into producing such pieces of work. For many students it will have been the first, and last, time they have been to any sort of art exhibit so the trip also acts as an important life experience."

On the visit students saw the work of Randall and Hepworth as well as some of the works of Henry Moore, Elizabeth Frink and James Turrell. The artists' work featured a variety of topics including the human form, abstract representations and architectural structures.

Mrs. Townsend added: "All the students engaged in what they were being told about the sculptures and took a great interest in the size and craft of the work on display.
Hopefully the trip will have helped them to develop their own ideas and provided them with some inspiration for future projects."

In addition to the sculptures the students were able to see the display of the featured artists sketch books allowing them to see the process of how the sculptures were created right through from the initial idea to their construction.

Principal Bernie Hunter said: "Trips such as these are part of our curriculum enrichment programme and are a vital part of students education as they allow them to see what the skills and crafts they learn in College can achieve when applied in the real world. I was delighted to hear the students talking so enthusiastically about the visit on their return and I'd like to thank Mrs. Townsend for giving them the opportunity to have this experience."
