Headteacher's Update 20 June 2025

Dear Parents and Carers
Every week, we remind students in school to ‘Turn Up, Take Part’ and this week has provided so many opportunities for Years 7-10 to take a really active part in school life.
Looking to the future, Year 10 students signed up for a workshop about applying to university. The workshop was delivered by visitors from Oxford University: they spoke to students about what to expect from studying at university and about life in their college (St Edmund Hall). We want our students to know that they can make it to Oxford and that universities and employers are looking for young people like them. Next month, we will welcome a wide range of employers and education providers to our careers fair to continue this work.
Looking to tradition, we have enjoyed creating this year’s well dressing which will be on display at the front of school for Hope Wakes week. This tradition goes back decades at Hope Valley College and is a celebration of the school’s place in our local community. It’s a pretty unique activity for a secondary school to be part of and it’s been great to see older, experienced students (and staff!) passing the tradition on.
What’s going on in school:
- Students took part in a Derbyshire school athletics event last Saturday with fantastic performances all round. 4 of our students finished in the top ten in their events – what an achievement!
- Faithful – The Musical – We are incredibly proud of some of our students who have written a musical based on the popular TV series ‘Traitors’. The students have directed, choreographed and rehearsed completely independently and are looking forward to performing ‘Faithful – The Musical’ at Bradwell Memorial Hall on Saturday 19 July. There is a matinee and an evening performance and tickets are available online.
- Students ranging from Y7 to 10 were involved in a community competition to revamp the planters along the Castleton Road. Winning designs from all 3 local schools (Hope Preschool, Hope Primary and Hope Valley College) all featuring a seasonal theme were selected and created by HVC students last week. We are incredibly proud of the work produced and hope they make you smile when you see them.
- A speaker from the Holocaust Educational Trust will be visiting school to talk to students in Year 9 on June 30th. This is not only to support our History curriculum but also supports the teaching of British values such as tolerance, individual liberty and mutual respect. Our visiting speaker is Tim Mulroy, the son of a holocaust survivor. Tim is the son of Hans Kohn (later to be John Mulroy). Tim was a principal lecturer for Sheffield Hallam University in Electronic Engineering. Tim grew up knowing that his father and aunt came to the UK from Czechoslovakia as refugees just before the outbreak of war. His father Hans and Aunt Hana talked with the family about their experiences in more depth. In retirement, Hana started sharing her testimony publicly, speaking to schools and other organisations on a regular basis. When Hana decided she was too old to give her talk, Tim volunteered to continue sharing their story.
Year 10 Mock Exams
The Y10 mock exams will run from Monday 23 June to Wednesday 2 July. Please see the link to the timetable below. Students will be handed their personal statement of entry nearer the time.
